Rama Cay, Nicaragua
Rama Cay is an island located on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Only accessible by boat, the island is about a 30min boat ride from Bluefields. The Rama Cay people are indigenous people of Nicaragua who are close to extinction. It is estimated that there are less than 5,000 ethnic Rama people with approximately 800 residing in Rama Cay. It is among one of the poorest regions in the Atlantic Coast. The people live off the land with little to no assistance from the Nicaraguan government.
NICC will be traveling to Rama Cay to assist the Rama people. Our trip will be from August 25, 2012- September 01, 2012.
